TV Livin'
I don't watch television. It's not exactly on purpose, I do own one but it's been essentially non-functional for nearly a year. It does suck once in a while, like when I'm cooking dinner on a Friday night and suddenly crave the dulcet tones of Cathy Wurzer's voice, or a glimpse of Eric Eskola's latest scarf on Almanac, but for the most part I deal with it. Maybe I'm just too lazy to buy a new TV.
Anyway, what is really fascinating is that over the course of this TV-free period, I have noticed how much television shows and commercials come up in conversation. Coworkers, friends and relatives alike are constantly asking me if I saw the latest episode of 24, or American Idol, or that cool commercial about whatever-the-hell. Seriously, it happens like 5 times a day.
Now, I'm not going to get all high and mighty and start posting links to essays about the effect of TV on social decay or some crap like that, because the reality is that I have my own method of brain-rotting, which is the internet. (e.g. "best of craigslist") Furthermore, if I got my lazy ass up and bought a TV I'd probably watch more than I'd like to admit.
So I guess the point, quite simply, is that it has been an interesting experiment, (however unintentional) the unscientific results of which lead me to believe that the people around me watch a heck of a lot of TV.
Highly edifying information, I know...
